JAZ Fund Scholarship

Alex and Joan-Ellen Zucker are long term residents of Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Mr. Zucker passed away in November of 2017. The Zuckers have three adult daughters and one son. They have contributed to community life as a couple for sixty three years, particularly in the fields of art and music.

Alex immigrated to the United States in 1939 at the age of fourteen from Yugoslavia to escape the Nazi terror against the Jewish citizens of Europe. After attending Stuyvesant High School in New York he joined the Tank Destroyers branch of the US Army, landed in Normandy and fought in the “Battle of the Bulge”. He attended the University of Vermont and Yale on the GI Bill. He joined Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1950 as a Nuclear Physicist, later becoming Laboratory Director. In retirement he taught Physics at the University of Tennessee.

Joan-Ellen moved to Oak Ridge at eleven, from New York, with her parents, during WWII to participate in the secret mission which eventually ended the war. She has been active in radio and television throughout her career. She has produced many interview programs for local stations and cable outlets. She was the founding director of the, now defunct, public access center CTV-OR. She has written often for local papers. She has been a professional potter for 45 years and has always participated in choral singing. She is a “lifetime” member of the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association.

The recipient of this scholarship should be an adult student who has immigrated to the United States, has successfully completed at least one required co-requisite remediation course, successfully completed one semester as a full time student and maintain at least a 2.5 GPA.
